Our thanks this month to
Sergeant Rick Simpson for attending our October meeting and updating us on crime in the area and what we can do about it. A full report on this matter is further on in this newsletter.

Georges River MP, Kevin Greene, for his continued support of the LPA and regular attendance at our meetings. It is noticed and appreciated!

Stormwater Drains
The Georges River Riverkeeper Program is currently arranging for maintenance to be undertaken to two stormwater drains in Cypress Drive.

They have notified us that they are currently mapping all stormwater drains in the GIS computer program at the Oatley Riverkeeper site. They are seking our help in identifying any stormwater drains where the drain is dangerous or is eroding the foreshore. The Riverkeeper program will investigate ways to contain rubbish, detain sediment, eliminate erosion and make the area environmentally sound and safe.

If you have a stormwater drain near you that is dangerous or eroding the foreshore, please ring Graham Whitelaw on 9584 1953 or email nrw@iform.com.au

New Trustee
With the resignation of Fred Freeman from his role as Trustee of the LPA earlier this year, a new Trustee has now been appointed. Mr Bryce Turner has kindly accepted our invitation to join long term Lugarno residents and LPA members Howard Courtney and Peter Mears as LPA Trustees. Bryce is active in many community activities including Lugarno Lions and has been a resident of Lugarno for many years. We look forward to working with Bryce.
Bushfire Protection Equipment
With the weather warming up and summer approaching, the LPA thought it timely to remind Lugarno residents of the equipment and contact numbers of residents who hold the keys to the fixed and mobile hose posts for fighting bushfires should the equipment be required in the upcoming months.

Fixed hose posts (FHP) and mobile hose post (MHP) trailers are located at:

MHP1 - Laurie Curtis, 20 Cedar Street - 9533 4034

FHP02 - Bayside Drive

FHP07 - Geoff Davies - 55 Allwood Crescent - 9534 1272

FHP21 - Owen McMahon - 47 Moons Avenue - 9533 1302

FHP25 - Frank Simpson - 13 Alsace Avenue, Peakhurst - 9534 2575

FHP - Brad Piltz - 51 Woodlands Avenue - 9534 2726

If the equipment is needed contact should be made with the Lugarno residents listed above. Riverwood Fire Brigade has also offered to provide training on use of the equipment. If there are enough interested LPA members and Lugarno residents, the LPA will contact Riverwood Fire Brigade and organise a suitable day and time. Please contact LPA Secretary Toni Hulme on 9584 0410 if you are interested.

The Fire Brigade has also asked us to let the Lugarno community know that they have undertaken extensive hazard reduction work in local bushland in preparation for Summer.

Crime in Lugarno
We had a great discussion and question time with Sergeant Rick Simpson of Hurstville Police at our October meeting. Sergeant Simpson attended the meeting at the request of the LPA committee given the recent upswing in vandalism and discussion surrounding resurrection of Neighbourhood Watch in areas 18 and 19.

Sergeant Simpson advised us that the Neighbourhood Watch program no longer has a sponsor and as such is really struggling in many areas. He suggested that as residents we practice the principles of Neighbourhood Watch and use the LPA as a forum for issues to be raised and followed up with the Police.

These principles are:
  • get to know your neighbours - criminals don't like "good neighbours" and will tend to avoid neighbourhoods where neighbours work together and help each other.
  • if you see suspicious activity around the neighbourhood report it to the Police.
    Phone: 9375 8599
  • provide information anonymously through the Crime Stoppers program. This program allows you to remain anonymous if you wish and has been very successful in recovering stolen property and drugs
    Phone: 1800 333 000
NSW policing is very much dependent upon local community support and Police need to know community concerns and issues.

Crimestoppers is also a very important tool and if your information leads to an arrest, you could receive an award of up to $1000. The Crimestoppers web site is www.police.nsw.gov.au and attracts more than 500 hits daily.

Don't forget as part of our focus on reducing crime and vandalism, PJ Locksmiths and Security is offering a 10% discount on the supply and installation of window locks to allow you to lock your windows in any open position. Any work required on security screen door locks will also attract the same discount. Offer is open until 30th November 1999 - call Paul on 9153 8783 or 0418 649629 to arrange a quote.

Trees in Lugarno
At our September meeting a number of concerned Lugarno residents attended and raised concerns about the process and criteria for tree removal and lopping in Lugarno. As a result of that discussion, we have contacted Hurstville Council and their Tree Preservation Officer will be attending our next meeting. Please come along if you are interested in knowing about tree trimming, lopping and removal approval processes.
