The Georges River Riverkeeper Program is currently arranging for maintenance to be undertaken to two stormwater drains in Cypress Drive. They have notified us that they are currently mapping all stormwater drains in the GIS computer program at the Oatley Riverkeeper site. They are seking our help in identifying any stormwater drains where the drain is dangerous or is eroding the foreshore. The Riverkeeper program will investigate ways to contain rubbish, detain sediment, eliminate erosion and make the area environmentally sound and safe. If you have a stormwater drain near you that is dangerous or eroding the foreshore, please ring Graham Whitelaw on 9584 1953 or email nrw@iform.com.au |
| With the resignation of Fred Freeman from his role as Trustee of the LPA earlier this year, a new Trustee has now been appointed. Mr Bryce Turner has kindly accepted our invitation to join long term Lugarno residents and LPA members Howard Courtney and Peter Mears as LPA Trustees. Bryce is active in many community activities including Lugarno Lions and has been a resident of Lugarno for many years. We look forward to working with Bryce. |

Please contact LPA Secretary Toni Hulme on 9584 0410 if you are interested. The Fire Brigade has also asked us to let the Lugarno community know that they have undertaken extensive hazard reduction work in local bushland in preparation for Summer. |

We had a great discussion and question time with Sergeant Rick Simpson of Hurstville Police at our October meeting. Sergeant Simpson attended the meeting at the request of the LPA committee given the recent upswing in vandalism and discussion surrounding resurrection of Neighbourhood Watch in areas 18 and 19. Sergeant Simpson advised us that the Neighbourhood Watch program no longer has a sponsor and as such is really struggling in many areas. He suggested that as residents we practice the principles of Neighbourhood Watch and use the LPA as a forum for issues to be raised and followed up with the Police. These principles are:
Crimestoppers is also a very important tool and if your information leads to an arrest, you could receive an award of up to $1000. The Crimestoppers web site is www.police.nsw.gov.au and attracts more than 500 hits daily. Don't forget as part of our focus on reducing crime and vandalism, PJ Locksmiths and Security is offering a 10% discount on the supply and installation of window locks to allow you to lock your windows in any open position. Any work required on security screen door locks will also attract the same discount. Offer is open until 30th November 1999 - call Paul on 9153 8783 or 0418 649629 to arrange a quote. |
| At our September meeting a number of concerned Lugarno residents attended and raised concerns about the process and criteria for tree removal and lopping in Lugarno. As a result of that discussion, we have contacted Hurstville Council and their Tree Preservation Officer will be attending our next meeting. Please come along if you are interested in knowing about tree trimming, lopping and removal approval processes. |
