Thank you to all the members who attended our
September meeting and contributed to the discussion regarding the planned
improvements to Evatt Park. It was a very fruitful meeting and from it we
were able to agree that the main area of concern was the 15 parking spots
planned for the end of the extended roadway and the size and length of the
extended roadway itself.
Issues were obviously raised that could not be answered and we have asked Hurstville Council if they might be able to have some of their engineers attend our October meeting so the questions can be put to the experts regarding traffic concerns. The presentation provided by Councillor Sansom at our August meeting in his capacity as Mayor indicated that Council might have some flexibility on the matter and we have asked our new Mayor, Councillor Pickering to see if it might be possible to have the Engineers and Councillors attend our next meeting. We would also like to thank Councillor Philip Sansom for his support and attendance at the LPA during his 12 months as Mayor. It was greatly appreciated. We look forward to the same level of support from our new Mayor Councillor Pickering and wish him the best in his mayoral role for the next 12 months. Rob Clarsen - 9153 5158 |

Foxes |
|
We have received a response from Hurstville Council regarding foxes and their control. Council has indicated that they recently ordered 4 new fox traps to be used in public reserves. "Den-co-fume" carbon monoxide gas canisters are to be introduced shortly which will allow Council to interrupt the fox breeding cycle by eliminating young fox clubs. No additional funding has been allocated in the 2000/2001 budget however, and this current work is to be funded from the existing bushcare maintenance budget.

Stormwater Trust Grant |
|
Hurstville
Council recently applied for a grant under the State Government’s
Stormwater Trust’s Grant Scheme. The
funds were to be applied to a project for Peakhurst West de-sedimentation
and re-afforestation project. The
project was to include 3 major gross pollutant traps together with bank
stabilisation and restoration of endangered turpentine and ironbark stands
adjacent to the stream. Unfortunately
the grant application of $694,000 was unsuccessful.
113 grants were made with a total value of $18.6 million and it is
unfortunate that Council was unsuccessful and Peakhurst Ward missed out on
what appears to be a very worthwhile project.

The
other matter of concern from our August meeting was the level of
vandalism, theft and other anti-social behaviour that was happening in
Lugarno again. We have recently written to Hurstville Police
and copied the correspondence to Kevin Greene, our local MP,
asking if they can increase their patrols into Lugarno on those known
“hot spot” nights of Friday and Saturday nights as the increased
presence will hopefully serve as a deterrent for letter box bombings,
tyre slashings and other incidents that have occurred again. Our
LPA reporting hotline has had two phone calls reported to it and we
thank those Lugarno residents who have rung. The incidents were:
We
also understand that the time taken to report incidents to the PAL line
is extensive and we will follow this up with the police.

Privet
- now a noxious weed in Hurstville City
|
|
Hurstville Council has recently been successful in having Broad Leaf Privet and Small Leaf Privet declared a noxious weed in the city of Hurstville. A formal application including a Weed Control Plan was submitted in 1999. The declaration of privet as a noxious weed means it must not be sold, propagated or knowingly distributed and any existing weed must be prevented from flowering and fruiting. Council will be re-printing its Tree Preservation Order and Noxious Weed brochure to reflect the recent declaration.

Can
Drive & Spring Fair
|
|
Lugarno Lions would like to thank all those Lugarno residents who contributed to their recent can drive. It was from all accounts very very successful. The Spring Fair held on September 10th was also very successful thanks to the good weather and bumper crowd in attendance. While final figures are not in, it looks like a large sum was raised for our local charities
